Discussion Starters

We hope these questions will help you consider (or discuss with others) what God is teaching you through this month’s study of His Word.

  1. "Prudence" is a word we don't use much these days (see Jan. 1). Based on the book of Proverbs, how would you define this classic virtue?
  2. How does submitting to God change the way we learn and the results of our learning?
  3. Why should believers grow in their knowledge of Scripture (see Jan. 8)? How can you plan to stretch and grow in this area?
  4. Why do you think we tend to separate the head part of learning from the action/experience part of learning (see Jan. 9–10)?
  5. What are some benefits of wisdom and learning for the Christian (see Jan. 11)? Why?
  6. We tend to trust our own perceptions and opinions above all others. Given this, how can we follow the example of Psalm 73 and allow a godly community to influence and shape our learning (see Jan. 23)?
  7. Growing up as a boy, did Jesus learn? (see Jan. 24). Why or why not?
  8. How might you increase a desire for godly learning in your own life (see Jan. 25)?
  9. Which biblical example of learning from this month inspired you the most? Which filled you with anxiety or fear? We encourage you to pray over these examples.
  10. Draw a Venn diagram with one circle labeled “learning” and one labeled “school”. Many people love one but dislike the other. In what ways do these two areas overlap? In what ways do they differ?
  11. What are some of the biblical connections you’ve discovered between learning, wisdom, and humility?
  12. How has this study changed the way you’ll plan to learn from God in the year ahead?
