Great Wisdom in Small Books

Many people today are desperately looking for love, but they don’t know what it is or where to find it. The apostle John gives a simple definition: “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us” (1 John 3:16). The first letter of John teaches us many lessons through striking contrasts—love and hate, light and darkness, love of the world and love of God, the Holy Spirit and the spirit of Antichrist—and shows us love in action. To know this love of God is the foundation of Christian life and of true fellowship among believers.

First John is one of the six short books of the New Testament we will study this month with Today in the Word. In his second letter, John shows us how to follow Christ’s commandments, pursuing truth and love for one another. And his third letter reminds us about the beauty of faithfulness and hospitality. The letter of Jude tells us how to defend our faith and warns us against ungodly people. Paul’s letter to Philemon helps us learn about new relationships in Christ, while his letter to Titus gives us important instructions for the church, including qualities of leaders, sound living, and our response to God’s grace.

Thank you for studying with us! May the wisdom contained in these short letters resonate with the same power and urgency in our hearts as we learn more about love, faith, and God’s grace in our lives.
