Daily Devotional | On Eagles’ Wings

Isaiah 40:28–31

The majestic bald eagle is the national bird of the United States, chosen in 1782. But the choice was not without controversy. Apparently, Benjamin Franklin argued against the eagle because he thought it was a bird of bad moral character. Why? Because it steals food from the fishing hawk.

Isaiah 40:31 is a favorite verse for many believers: “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles.” This verse speaks a profound promise of God’s unending strength and the renewal only He can provide. It acknowledges that all of us, regardless of our age, can experience weariness and exhaustion. While we are limited in our human ability, God has infinite power. God’s promise is clear: Those who hope in Him will have their strength renewed.

There is some scholarly discussion about the original word translated eagle in most Bible versions as it is also the same word used for vultures, which is another bird of prey. The griffon vulture is native to Israel, known for its long wingspan and soaring capabilities. So, it is probable that Isaiah was referencing that bird instead of an eagle.

While we may not like to think of ourselves as soaring on wings like “vultures,” the verse is not focusing on the bird’s appearance or diet. Rather, the Bible is highlighting its smooth soaring capability and the calmness with which it takes to the air. Eagles and vultures are known for their ability to fly high above storms, using the turbulent winds to lift them higher, rather than being battered by them.

Similarly, when we place our hope and trust in God, we can rise above life’s challenges and difficulties. Instead of being overwhelmed, we can find strength and endurance to keep going.
